Test Driving The Audi A8

After reading all the hype and speaking with the experts, here's one vehicle I'm checking out in much more detail. I want to talk here about the 2008 Audi A8, but already my wife has laid down the law, and we'll be taking the baby that is set to be the 'king' of large luxury sedans in 2009 for a test drive as soon as it becomes available to us. For many years I've been a strong advocate and owner of BMWs, but I suspect that's about to change.

Not only is this car available with amazing extras such as acoustic glass (making for a much quieter experience), 19" alloy wheels and (wait for it)... ventilated seats, it actually feels nice and light - which enables easier maneuverability on tight corners, even at relatively comfortable speeds. I've been told this is as a result of the aluminium body of the A8.

The A8 is available as a V8 model, and in my mind has lots of power, but with the driving we do across the causeway from Singapore and onto the open highways of Malaysia, I'm quite sure that we will be opting for the 12-cylinder engine version. Even with unbelievable effortless acceleration, the exeperience is relaxing and quiet to say the least (not to mention loads of fun).

From a comfort angle, the 2008 Audi A8 suits me down to a tee. The seats and legroom are more than enough to satisfy my usually aching back on the long trips across countries, while still being snug fitting through the tight turns of the inner city streets. The backseat space is excellent for our baby in his baby seat while toting all of his toys.

One of the newest options for the 2008 model, is the very high-tech 'side assist system'. This gives the driver the ability to scan blind spots along the car (using radar technology). Also, for those drivers who sometimes lapse a little in concentration (no, I'm not singling out my wife here), also available is the 'lane assist system' - a small camera which alerts the driver if they swerve or stray across or away from lane markings. This warning comes in the form of a steering-wheel vibration.

In summary, settle-in for the drive, adjust the 'dual-zone climate controls' and pump up the 'Bang & Olufsen' stereo system and enjoy the mobile luxury experience of a lifetime. My family and I will certainly be doing so in this coming Chinese Year of the Ox!!
